A timeless classic with military roots, the pea coat has been worn by sailors and marines for centuries. Its origins are often traced to Dutch seafarers, who needed a durable coat to stand up to harsh winds and weather. The name is thought to come from the Dutch word “pij,” referring to a coat made from heavy, sturdy wool.

Still worn at sea today, the pea coat remains valued for its practical protection from the elements. Our 1938 Pea Coat is made from 1,000 g/m² fabric woven exclusively for us in Portugal from 100% virgin wool, using a traditional recipe. Its substantial weight gives it the wind- and water-repellent qualities associated with the original.
